Media Advisory Committee Meeting Summary |  Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Media Members Present:  Sandy Ringer (Seattle Times), Paul Beattie (Eli Sports), Doug Pacey (Tacoma News Tribune), Nathan Joyce (Kitsap Sun) Media Members Present via Teleconference:  Steven Smith (Grant County Journal), Jerrel Swenning (Yakima Herald), Greg Lee (Spokesman Review) WIAA Staff Present:  Conor Laffey, Cindy Adsit, Andy Knapp, Alli Krous
Andy, of the WIAA Staff, gave the Committee an overview of the Association’s new relationship with 3 Point Productions.  He highlighted the efforts the production team performed at State Basketball and touched on their consulting efforts at State Cheer.  Conor went over the changes that will be occurring on the website.  The Committee expressed interest in reinstating the schedules/scores/standing component on the website, and offered possible solutions.
The Committee also requested brackets from wrestling, tennis and golf be placed on the WIAA Bracket page.
Conor also touched on the fact that, during the meetings, he will clearly define when topics are off-the-record and reiterated Mike’s availability for interviews after the Committee meetings.
Media Go Around:
Members of the Committee discussed current issues going on in their specific areas.
The Committee gave positive feedback concerning the changes that took place at State Wrestling.  The orange vests worked well and could potentially be used at other State Events by the photographers.  The tables set up during the championship rounds were also well received.  A reminder needs to be sent out to the registered media members about entering through the SW gate.  No other improvements were offered by the Committee.
Concerns were expressed about being hassled by Staff Pro at the Tacoma Dome when trying to conduct post-game interviews.  Greg was not allowed access on the court after the basketball games to interview student-athletes and coaches.  Conor will share the concern with the Tournament Managers and have it relayed to the appropriate Staff Pro personnel.
Sandy raised the issue that some Regional Sites for basketball were not prepared to handle media.  Conor said he would put together an expectation sheet for the Tournament Managers to make sure they had an appropriate set-up for media at each of the sites.
Cindy gave insight to the site selection process for State Volleyball.  She informed the Committee that 3A, 4A State Volleyball will remain at St. Martin’s and that 2A Volleyball has relocated from Evergreen State College to Pierce College.
Spring Tournaments:
A list was put together to present to the Tournament Managers to ensure the media has appropriate accommodations at each of the Spring Meets.  List includes tables with power, photo copy of stats, rosters and time to finish articles.
Future Meetings:
The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 10 a.m. at the WIAA Office.
