Bruce Caldwell
Fine Arts

Bruce Caldwell is a pioneer in the Fine Arts for high school students across the state of Washington. Bruce got his start in music at a young age, which continued into his pursuit of higher education at the University of Washington where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1964.

Upon graduation, Bruce became the Director of the Band and Orchestra at Madrona Junior High School in Edmonds, and then Woodway High School (Edmonds-Woodway HS) until 1996. At Woodway High School, his band represented the state of Washington at the 1973 and 1993 Presidential Inaugural parades, and also performed at Walt Disney World. Other performances of note have included Disneyland, Truth or Consequences TV show, UW football games (the only band to ever substitute for the Husky Band at a preseason football game), Seattle Seahawks games and World’s Fairs in Spokane and Vancouver, B.C. The City of Edmonds established June 9, 1988, as “Bruce Caldwell Day” in honor of him and his service to the Edmonds community. He was named Outstanding Music Educator for WMEA’s Sno-King region in 1996.

Bruce remained connected to his Husky ties by serving as the Assistant Director of the UW Marching Band from 1965-1981. He Later earned his Master of Arts degree in 1980 from UW.

Bruce’s vision and passion for Fine Arts gave him the ability to manage and direct many competitions for students who shared his same passion. Manager of the Kingbowl Marching Band Festival in Seattle from 1977-87, Bruce continued to provide opportunities for students to excel in music. From 1995-2008, he was the Tournament Manager for the State Solo and Ensemble Contest and is credited for the inception and expansion of the ensemble portion. Today, Bruce is currently the Exeutive Director of the Washington Music Educators Association.

Bruce was inducted as a member of the Inaugural Class of the WMEA Hall of Fame in 1998. In 2011, Bruce was honored at the National Association for Music Education’s Northwest Division Conference with the Distinguished Service Award.

Bruce’s professional memberships and positions held include the following:

• Musicians Association of Seattle
• American Federation of Musicians
• Washington Education Association
