Shelton High School is currently seeking an experienced and dynamic head football coach
beginning with the 2018 season. Shelton High School, in the State of Washington, is a 3A school grades 10-12, with enrollment of approximately 1100 students. Beginning with the 2019/20 school year, the school will be comprised of grades 9-12. The community is a “One Team Town” with a rich history supporting athletic programs.
Shelton is a member of the 8-team, South Sound Conference. In addition to coaching the
varsity football team, responsibilities include the organization and management of the entire football program. The successful candidate must possess strong leadership skills, a positive education-based approach, and a deep understanding of the game. Candidates must have a comprehensive understanding of fitness and training regiments appropriate for high school
athletes. Candidates should be dynamic, energetic, motivated, and possess the willingness to commit the required time for a successful program. Qualified applicants should be from a
successful high school program with an emphasis on developing and maintaining a quality
program. Candidates must have experience in developing a cohesive relationship with the
local youth football program.
Strong preference will be given to applicants who possess, or are able to obtain, Washington State teaching credentials and are willing to teach at Shelton High School. Immediate teaching positions will be available; candidates with teaching credentials are strongly encouraged to
apply for the teaching position(s) when posted.
The coaching position is paid a stipend that is dependent on qualifications and experience;
salaries for teaching positions depend on experience and education, as well as other provisions provided for under the teacher’s bargained agreement.

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
JOB SUMMARY:
The job of the Head Football Coach is to carry out the philosophy of the Athletic Program. In addition to
coaching the varsity football team, responsibilities include the organization and management of the entire
football program. Candidates must have a comprehensive understanding of fitness and training regiments
appropriate for high school athletes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Implements program policies and procedures, which align with the district’s standard operating procedures for coaches.
• Relates well to student-athletes and demonstrates care for them beyond the sport experience.
• Prioritizes sportsmanship, work ethic, organization, and communication with players, staff and the

community.
• Displays positive qualities such as enthusiasm, a strong work ethic, and loyalty.
• Represents the program with the appropriate behavior and integrity at all times while developing and

maintaining productive relationships with other employees, parents, students, and opposing squads.
• Maintains appropriate levels of confidentiality in all matters pertaining to students, parents, staff and the

program.
• Demonstrates support of the comprehensive athletic program.
• Assumes responsibility for care of equipment and facilities being used.
• Dynamic personality that will get the entire Shelton community involved in football
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Strong communication, public relation, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to write reports and correspondence consistent with the duties of this position.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret information.
• Displays courtesy, tact, and respect when dealing with others.
• Ability to perform basic math using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals consistent with the

duties of the position.

• Ability to interact with student athletes of different ages and football skill levels in a positive and professional manner.
• Demonstrate a high degree of integrity as all Shelton High School staff are considered role models for Shelton High students.
• Motivate and mentor student athletes.
• Must promote school spirit.
• Communicate with school administration and football families.
• Plan, organize, and execute off-season, summer, and pre-season training and preparation programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Employee experiences constant interruptions and inflexible deadlines. The noise level in this environment is
quiet to loud. The work environment may vary from extremely cold to extremely hot, depending on the season
of the year. In-district and out-of-town travel required as necessary for training and/or to carry out duties and
responsibilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be 21 years or older
• Previous experience as varsity level coordinator from a successful high school program with an emphasis on turning around a program is strongly desired.
• Experience in developing a cohesive relationship with the local youth football program.
• Maintains certification in CPR and First Aid.
• Such other qualifications/trainings as set by the WIAA.
• Heads Up Football training.
• Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance.

REPORTS TO: Athletic Director or designee.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits according to adopted salary schedule and negotiated agreement.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of Washington State Law and the bargained agreement.
