  • WIAA Announces Class of 2014 Hall of Fame
    4/8/2014

RENTON, Wash. – The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) announced the six inductees for the Class of 2014 Hall of Fame that will be honored at a May 7 luncheon at the Renton Pavilion Event Center.

“The 2014 WIAA Hall of Fame will honor the storied careers of six individuals that have left a lasting impression on interscholastic activities in the state of Washington,” WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese said.  “The Association is grateful to these individuals and the time and effort they put in during their careers.”

This year’s inductees entering the Hall of Fame in the athlete category are Kate Starbird of Lakes High School and Lori Henry of Shorewood High School.  Starbird left her legacy as one of the greatest female basketball players the state of Washington has ever produced.  During her four-year career as a Lancer, she was the state’s all-time career scoring leader, a Parade First-Team All-American, and was named as the Seattle Times Player of the Year, twice.  Fellow high school standout, Henry, was a decorated soccer player for the Shorewood Thunderbirds.  A two-time First-Team All-WESCO League member, Henry continued her success at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a member of the 1991 Women’s World Cup Championship team in China.

Joining the Class as coach inductees are Tom Kramer of South Whidbey High School and Jim Clem of Dayton High School and Burlington-Edison High School.  Kramer built one of the state’s most successful tennis programs.  Before retiring in 2011, Kramer claimed 23 district championships, 18 top six finishes and six state championships.  Clem was viewed as one of the top baseball coaches in the state with 15 state tournament appearances and a cumulative record of 481-212.

The Class of 2014 fine arts inductee is Dave Weatherred.  Weatherred is credited for creating two of the premier music programs in the Spokane School District.  He first made his mark as a music teacher at West Valley High School before taking the reigns at nearby Ferris High School.

The final inductee is Steven Colby, who will be inducted as an official.  A basketball official for 41 years, Colby currently holds the position of official’s coordinator for the 3A, and 4A State Basketball tournaments.

For complete bios on the inductees, please visit the WIAA website.

The 2014 Hall of Fame Banquet will also recognize the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Smart Choices Scholarship recipients.  One male and one female graduating senior who have shown excellence in athletics/activities, academics, leadership and community service will receive a $5,000 scholarship, which will be awarded at the banquet.  The Smart Choices Scholarship winners will be announced at a later time.
