  • WIAA, Washington Army National Guard Announce 2013-14 Scholastic Cup Champions
    6/5/2014

RENTON, Wash. – The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) and Washington Army National Guard proudly announce the 2013-14 Scholastic Cup Champions.

The Scholastic Cup is the WIAA’s most prestigious annual school award.  The yearlong competition recognizes the top school in each of the six WIAA classifications based on academic, athletic and sportsmanship excellence.  Points are awarded in each of the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Championships and also for Academic State Championships.

In an ongoing effort to promote sportsmanship, the Association incorporated a component that gives schools 25 points for no more than one student or coach ejection.  Schools lose points on a progressive basis for a second, third or fourth varsity player or coach ejection, and are disqualified from the Scholastic Cup if a fifth ejection is received.

“This is an exciting time for the Association and for the member schools that won the WIAA/Washington Army National Guard Scholastic Cup,” WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese said.  “The award recognizes the programs that capture the true essence of excellence in athletics, academics and sportsmanship.”

Continuing its run atop the 2B classification is the Bear Creek Grizzlies.  The Grizzlies mark of 1,515 points puts them second all-time in the 2B classification point total.  Eight Academic State Championships helped the Grizzlies distance themselves from second place finisher, St. George’s Dragons by 370 points.  The Cup marks the eighth overall victory and seventh in the 2B classification for Bear Creek.

Securing their seventh-straight titles are the King’s Knights and the Mercer Island Islanders.  The Knights claim the 1A classification Cup after capturing State Titles in Girls Golf, Girls Track and Field and Girls Cross Country.  In addition, King’s tacked on three Academic State Championships to finish with 1,390 points, placing them seventh all-time in the 1A classification.  The Islanders tallied the highest mark of the year with 1,895 points.  Mercer Island’s State Championships in Girls and Boys Tennis and Swimming and Diving, Volleyball along with a trio of Academic State Championships guided them to their third highest Scholastic Cup mark.

Claiming their second-straight titles are the Newport (Bellevue) Knights with 1,870 points and the Colton Wildcats with 940.  The Knights scored nearly 800 points more than the second place Mead Panthers after capturing three State Titles and seven Academic State Championships.  The Knights point total is good enough for fourth on the all-time Scholastic Cup standings list, and marks the highest point total by a 4A school.  In the 1B classification, the Wildcats were State Champions in Baseball, Boys and Girls Basketball, and Softball.  With two Academic State Titles, Colton edged past Evergreen Lutheran (905) and placed eighth in the 1B standings.

After four 2A top five finishes, the Capital Cougars earns the top spot with a point total of 1,410, 105 points better than the second place, Squalicum Storm.  The Cougars garnered three Academic State Championships and a Boys Tennis State Championship for their third Cup (two in 4A, one in 2A).
