  • Clark and Quincy Named 2017 WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Smart Choices Scholarship Winners
    5/9/2017

RENTON, Wash. - The WIAA, Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires announced Emma Clark of Sehome High School and Riley Quincy of Selah High School as the recipients of the fifth annual Smart Choices Scholarship, Monday.

The winners receive a $5,000 scholarship to the school of their choice. Clark will attend Stanford University to pursue a degree in education next fall while Quincy will enroll at the University of Arizona with hopes to become a physical therapist, athletic trainer or teacher.

In addition to the two $5,000 scholarships, the Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires have teamed up to issue eight $1,000 scholarships to four male and four female finalists.

“The WIAA is proud to recognize such deserving student-athletes,” said WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese. “Emma and Riley have proven to be leaders on their teams, at their schools and in their communities.”

Clark is a standout athlete in basketball, cross country and track and field while also receiving three varsity letters in orchestra. On the cross country course, she finished 38th at the 2A WIAA State Championships both in 2015 and 2016 while helping Sehome to second- and third-place finishes, respectively. Clark was also a member of the Mariners’ basketball team which advanced to a Regional appearance in 2015. Showing her skill and positive nature, the senior was named the Sehome Female Sportsmanship Athlete of the year for 2016-17.

In the classroom, the Bellingham native holds a 4.0 GPA while being named an AP Scholar with Distinction and earning a top score of “5” on four different AP tests. Clark was the President of the National Hispanic Honor Society as a senior after receiving a seal of bi-literacy for Spanish in 2016. Clark intends to put that to use by teaching English as a second language to children around the world.

Riley Quincy highlighted his high school athletic career by starting on the Selah baseball team which was crowned the 2016 WIAA State Champions, the first baseball title in school history. Quincy also had success at the state level when he helped the basketball team finish runner-up at the 2A Hardwood Classic. The senior has been named to the all-league teams in baseball, basketball and football.

Quincy maintains a 3.97 GPA while challenging himself with AP and honors courses and also serving as the ASB Senior Class President and a member of the National Honor Society. His service has earned him the title of the top charity fundraiser after organizing a community dodgeball tournament which raised more the $2,500.

“Supporting high school athletes is an honor for each of my fellow dairy farmers,” said Dairy Farmers of Washington Board Chair and dairy farmer Michelle Schilter. “We are particularly proud to partner with Les Schwab to provide scholarships to some very deserving student athletes. The Dairy Farmers of Washington wish these students well as they work to fulfill their dreams in college and beyond.”

“Our founder, Les Schwab, believed in supporting the communities where his employees live and work – that’s why stores and employees do much more than sell tires and brakes," Les Schwab Tire Centers Regional Manager Andy Sherry said. “We invest our time and resources into events and organizations that promote responsibility, hard work and serving the community – values our company believes in. It's why ?for the last 10 years ?we are proud ?to partner with the Dairy Farmers of Washington and the WIAA. Our Smart Choices Scholarship program is just one more way we are trying to make a difference in our communities.”

The two recipients will be presented their scholarship, July 29 at the WIAA Coaches’ School Luncheon.
