Sports), via teleconference - Greg Lee (Spokesman Review)

WIAA Staff:
Conor Laffey, Andy Knapp, Alli Krous, Mike Colbrese, John Miller, Andy Barnes, Bryan Lonborg

Introductions:
WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese gave a welcoming statement and briefly talked about the classification committee, the penalty chart committee and the ejection review committee.

Media Go Around:
Members of the committee discussed current issues going on in their specific areas:
Paul – Eli Sports Network (ESN) www.youresn.com website is coming soon and will have schedules,
scores, and standings for all sports in Districts 1-4 for next year.
Sandy – Title IX 40th Anniversary story coming out Sunday 6/17/2012.
Bob – Discussed WIAA Network’s first year and how successful it was. There will be a meeting next
week to set the schedule for this coming year’s State Tournament coverage.

WIAA Go Around:
Alli gave a brief summary on the social media sites from the year. Facebook fans are now over 5,500 and Twitter followers are near 700 over the course of the year. The Committee gave feedback as to how we can improve both, suggesting that we link to more prep stories. Bob suggested having interaction
from followers on the broadcasts.

John Miller discussed the classification committee and the tasks they are facing. The Committee will come up with an amendment(s) if necessary that will be passed on to the membership for review and if it is passed will go into effect in the 2014-2015 school year.

Andy Barnes presented the WIAA Kick-Off Classic (formerly known as the Emerald City Kick-Off Classic) information including site, times, and teams participating, to be held at Eastern Washington University Aug. 31-Sept. 1. The Emerald City Volleyball Invitational will be renamed as well to the WIAA Volleyball Invitational, to be played at Cheney High School.

Andy Knapp discussed the overhauling of the mywiaa.com website and system. The first step is to get the new directory available. Athletic Directors will be given new usernames and passwords and will be instructed to provide all coaches names and contact information for specific groups to access. Andy Knapp also discussed creating a uniform look for all of the district websites.

New Ideas for Next Year:
Monthly media conference calls with Mike Colbrese. The Committee unanimously was in favor of that for news and updates. Conor will get topic ideas for these conference calls from the Committee.

The Committee agreed that these calls should take place on Wednesdays around 3pm and last 30-45 minutes.
New members may join the Committee next year. The Committee suggested Justin Best (photographer) from the Everett Herald, Craig or Kevin (Tri-City Herald). Conor would like to add on a radio personality also.

State Championship Feedback:
The Committee discussed each of the Spring State Championship events. The media gave their input as to any issues that were present. Non-traditional media at a few tournaments (Track and Field in Tacoma) were an issue in holding long interviews with athletes directly after their race/event was finished. The Committee suggested having a dress code to distinguish media from non-traditional media.

At State Track in Tacoma Nathan and Greg were given a small booth and would like more room next year with more desk space, both Friday and Saturday.
Sandy would like to see the highlight sheets filled out by the WIAA tournament staff (Leah’s players) at State Softball.

Future Meeting:
The next meeting will be scheduled for Wednesday, October 3, 2012.
