Wrap up for 2011-12:
    • Media registration passes worked out well
    • The orange/yellow vests for the Mat Classic helped keep non-media out and give media less hassle getting
      onto the floor.
    • Conor created a new Media Policy over the summer (’12) to eliminate non-media members from entering the
      designated media areas.

Marketing Media Liaison:
Conor & Andy Knapp discussed that the State Tournament Managers had to handle many different items at State events and things were slipping through the cracks. So, the goal this year is to implement a media liaison that can:
    • Check banners & signage throughout the event
    • Greet sponsors/partners and direct them to their setup location
    • Greet awards presenters and direct them to their proper location
    • Check in with the pass gate for any last minute media updates

Andy Knapp:
Discussed the WIAA website overhaul project and progress, with the tournament registration process being tested currently.

Media Go Around:
Members of the committee discussed current issues going on in their specific areas.

Hall of Fame (Andy Barnes)
Andy Barnes asked the committee members to collect names of athletes within their respective communities that may be considered for Hall of Fame induction.
    • Nomination Deadline: Nov. 9, 2012
    • Must be at least 30 years old
    • Finalized in January; Press Release sent out in March; Induction Luncheon is the first Wednesday of May.
Hall of Fame was established in 2004.
    • Categories include: Athletes, Coaches, Team/Program, Officials, Administrators, Fine Arts, and Contributors.
    • Focus on his/her high school athletic career
    • Community involvement is a plus
    • Post-high school athletic career is a plus but not necessary

Committee Requests/Concerns for the 2012-13 Year:
    • At Volleyball (St. Martin’s) – Double check floor access for post-game interviews, improve sightline by
possibly moving downstairs? Last year, there was no media registration table at the entrance. Reminder:
block off the first row behind the media table if the media table stays upstairs.
    • Radio request: halftime interviews with players/coaches going into the locker and coming back out on to the
    • Radio rights fees – different charges in different districts. More expensive on the west side. Can some costs
      go back to the districts?
    • Hall of Fame current members – names, classifications, geographical locations, etc.
    • Radio PA Scripts & Reads
    • Regulate Working Media Only areas at Gridiron Classic & the Hardwood Classic (Yakima, boys’ court). The
no cheering policy needs to be reiterated for all WIAA State Championships.
    • Better communication in the spring after rainouts of game date/time/location changes.

New Media Policy:
(See the supplemental information on Media State Championship Procedures and Press Pass Procedure & Criteria).
Student Media will get a separate pass and spot for writers, photographers, and/or videographers.

State Championship Stats – Stat Crew:
This live stats feature will be used at State Football (Gridiron Classic), State Soccer, and State Baseball for the semifinals and finals for the 2012-13 year. The stats will be made available for both the on-site media as well as available online. College SID’s are currently being contacted to perform this role at the three State events.  *Basketball will still use CyberSports

Action Items for Committee Members:

Future Meeting:
The next meeting will be scheduled for Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the WIAA office.
