2016 Press Release

WIAA Announces Class of 2016 Hall of Fame
RENTON, Wash. – The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) has announced the inductees for the 2016 Hall of Fame luncheon and induction ceremony, Wednesday, May 4 at the Renton Pavilion Event Center.
The 2016 class is headlined by former University of Washington girls basketball standout, Megan (Franza) Carlson. Joining Carlson is former Fife High School volleyball coach Jan Kirk, Seattle Academy’s Joel Underwood and long-time Seattle Times prep sports writer Sandy Ringer.
Carlson, a Leavenworth native, was a multi-sport athlete for the Cascade (Leavenworth) Kodiaks where she garnered all-league honors in volleyball, basketball and track field all four years. As a track star, Carlson captured 12 individual State Championships. In basketball, Carlson was named the Washington State Associated Press Player of the Year as a senior and amassed 2,344 career points.  She continued her basketball career at the University of Washington and eventually became a fourth round pick in the 2001 WNBA draft by the Phoenix Mercury.
After 24 years of coaching, Kirk captured nearly every accomplishment she could. During her career, Kirk claimed 18 league titles, 14 district championships, made 20 State appearances and celebrated four State Championships. A Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee in 2010, Kirk guided the Trojans to a perfect league finish in the final three years without dropping a set.
Underwood currently teaches English, History and Speech and Debate at the Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences. The Washington State Forensic Association Coach of the Year in 2011, Underwood has claimed 10 3A Speech and Debate Team Championships.  During his coaching span of 15 years, 23 event State Champions have been crowned.
Former Seattle Times prep writer, Ringer, has covered some of the most prolific high school stories during her 35-year career. As a writer, Ringer received numerous awards for her work including a Top Ten award by the Associated Press Sports Editors for her article, Title IX Turns 30, written in 2001.
The Hall of Fame Induction begins at noon and will include the class of 2015 after last year’s ceremony was postponed. The 2015 class includes Greg Brashear, Cindy C-Wilson, John Crawford, Bruce Gutgesell, Kasey Keller, Dick Langum, Jim Meyerhoff, Ugur Taner and Dan White.
