Brian Steves has been a music educator in the Mukilteo School District for 21 years. He began his career teaching band and choir at Olympic View Junior High and in 1993 was the inaugural band teacher at Kamiak High School.
During Steves’ tenure as the band instructor, musical groups under his direction won numerous awards for jazz, marching band and concert band. The 200-member Kamiak High Show Band has represented the Mukilteo community at various events throughout the world; most notably the 1997 presidential inaugural parade for Bill Clinton in Washington, D.C. and the 2000 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland. In 2003, the Show-Band was also the first Washington band to participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. In 1999, Steves also became the Director of Orchestras at Kamiak High School. Kamiak orchestras involve 140 string students and 70 wind/percussion students. Kamiak is a regular contender at the state festival and the Northwest Orchestra Festival.
Steves is a regular at state conferences serving as a clinician, festival adjudicator and manager. He is also active in the SKMEA leadership, having served as vice-president, president and past-president. He received the SKMEA music Educator of the Year in 2008. Steves was also the Washington Music Educators Association president for the Snohomish-King County Region from 1996-2000.
