Media Advisory Committee Meeting Summary |  Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011

Media Members Present:  Sandy Ringer (Seattle Times), Nathan Joyce (Kitsap Sun), Greg Lee (Spokesman Review), Steven Smith (Grant County Journal), Bob Akamian (PlayOn! Sports), Paul Beattie (Eli Sports), via teleconference/Skype - Doug Lange (Cascade Media), Jerrel Swenning (Yakima Hearald)

WIAA Staff:
Conor Laffey, Andy Knapp, Alli Krous, Mike Colbrese, Cindy Adsit, Brian Smith

Introductions:  WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese gave a welcoming statement and briefly talked about a new agreement with When We Were Young Productions (WWWY).   Each media member gave a brief report of their background and where they work. Assistant Executive Directors Cindy Adsit and Brian Smith also greeted the committee.

Media Go Around: Members of the committee discussed current issues going on in their specific areas:

WIAA Go Around: Andy reiterated the agreement with WWWY and gave insight on the new landscape of the website. He discussed the development of the schedules scores and standings piece and the new online portal from the WWWY agreement.

Communication Model: Committee members expressed their opinion on receiving more releases about amendments to the handbook and to Board Meetings.  For the Rep. Assembly Meetings, the Committee preferred more communication leading up to the meetings and for timely releases following them.  For Board Meetings, the Committee wanted the highlights of the meetings, most notably the changes to state events.

State Championship Feedback: The Committee discussed each of the Fall State Championship events.  Parking was the main topic of concern, especially at the Tacoma Dome and Weyerhaeuser Aquatic Center.  The Committee suggested a package to sell to the media that would include one price prior to the event for parking passes, programs, tickets and food vouchers.

The Committee offered a suggestion of complete playoff breakdown of football and basketball games so they can track teams from district and regional contests.  The Committee unanimously agreed to have a password protected media registration to gain credentials into the state events.

Future Meetings: The meetings will remain as scheduled with the option of a fourth meeting in June.
