Middle School/Junior High Bat Rule
In April 2005 the WIAA Executive Board approved
the following exception to the National Federation bat rule:
- For middle level (middle school/junior high)
leagues playing on fields with 80' base paths and a distance from the
pitching rubber to the point of the plate of 54', that league may adopt bat
dimensions up to but not exceeding a length-to-weight ratio of -5.
This means that the weight of the bat, in ounces, may be no more than 5 less
than the length of the bat in inches.
- For middle level leagues playing on fields
with 90' base paths and a distance from the pitching rubber to the point of
the plate of 60'6", that league may adopt bat dimensions up to but not
exceeding a length-to-weight ratio of -7.
- In both cases, the adoption of a
length-to-weight ratio of greater than the prescribed -3 carries with it a
waive of the BESR certification standard.
The adoption of a variance needs to be at the
league level and does not need to be communicated to the WIAA office
