Hello, my name is Lily Karges and I’m a junior at Holy Names Academy in Seattle and am proud to be an HNA Cougar! Holy Names is a relatively small all girls catholic school on Capitol Hill consisting of about 680 students and about 160 in the class of 2013 alone. At Holy Names I participate in Shirts Across America, which is a service group working to move families in New Orleans who were affected by Hurricane Katrina back home. I am looking forward to going down to New Orleans for the third time this spring break to continue to rebuild homes and further experience the New Orleans community, culture and improvements being made since the hurricane. I also participate in choir and vocal ensemble at my school, and I am so excited to perform at Benaroya Hall for the third year in a row this upcoming week with many other catholic high schools in the greater Seattle area. Also, my vocal ensemble is participating in a solo ensemble competition this weekend at Seattle Pacific University, so that should be a really different and fun learning experience for me!

In the Fall I play volleyball for Holy Names, and in the Winter I do swim team. This volleyball season our team had some set backs with a lot of key players being injured, but overall the season was a great success and everyone’s volleyball skills and teamwork skills improved greatly especially with the help of Coach Brian (better known by the team as Coach B). One of the major incidents that happened was a car accident that myself and three other players got into on the way to a game against Seattle Prep. Two of us, including myself, had minor concussions and the other two girls also had some minor injuries and one a more serious injury. Although this was a detrimental accident to the team ranking wise, it really brought us together and made us all truly appreciate each other and the relationships we formed over the season on and off the court.

Swim season this year has been great and now, as we are nearing the end, I can look back and say we have had some really fantastic meets this year! Metros are just around the corner and we are hoping to have a lot of girls competing in events across the board. Unfortunately, my solo ensemble competition is at the same time as the Metro League Championships, so I won’t be competing, but I will definitely be rooting for my team in spirit! We almost went undefeated once again during the regular swim season; however, at our latest meet against Lakeside they scored just a few more points than us! Both Holy Names and O’Dea (the all boys school we compete with) are working really hard to do well at both Metro Prelims and Championships.

Sports at HNA are so special to me and many others who participate in them at our school. They create a fun and competitive environment for people to bond over both upsets and successes and I feel so lucky to be a member of such great teams! I’m looking forward to the rest of the school year and seeing what Spring will have in store, thanks for reading!
