My name is Linnea Phillips and I am currently a senior at West Valley High School, located in Yakima, Washington. A couple years ago, our high school was remodeled, but only moved up the street from the old high school. Unlike most other high schools, West Valley is separated into two buildings. We have remodeled the old high school and transformed it into what is now known as the West Valley Freshman Campus.  Though our student body size is smaller than most of the other 3A schools, we haven’t let that stand in the way of our success for our sports teams this year!

I am a part of the West Valley volleyball team as well as track and field. Though I don’t play a high school sport during the winter season, I continue to play club volleyball for Central Washington Elite Volleyball Club. The past four years, I have had the privilege to be a part of the West Valley Volleyball Program which has been an experience I will never forget. This last year, especially. My team finished the season with a 35-0 record. A perfect season. Completing league season undefeated was amazing, and making it through districts and regionals was unbelievable, but as we concluded the season with the 3A State Championship Title and an undefeated record was an absolute dream come true. I love my teammates and I was privileged to represent my school on and off the court as a West Valley Ram. Next year I will be attending NNU (Northwest Nazarene University) in Nampa, Idaho on a volleyball scholarship! As I mentioned earlier, I participate on the track and field as a pole-vaulter and a member of the 4x1 girls relay team. My junior year was my first year as a pole-vaulter and I was able to break the junior record at 9’6”. As spring sports continue, I plan on continuing to break the high school record which is currently set at 10’!

Much like our volleyball team, a lot of our other sports teams have shown great success this school year. In the fall, our girls soccer team finished third in league. After winning the playoff opener, the girls lost a tough game between University Spokane at the regional playoff.  Our girls swim team took third at districts and won the Yakima Valley Championship Meet. During the season, a new school record was set in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Then our boys cross country and football team showed major improvements over the past few years. The football team finished their season with a 4-6 record, with 2 league wins and our boys cross country took second in districts!

In the winter, our bowling team tied for 1st in league and took 2 individuals to state! Our wrestling team also took a few boys to state. Justin Wilkins finished the season with a 5th place finish. Along with him at state were Preston Barch and Robert Koch. Much like our girls swim team, our boys swim team also had a new school record set by Kian Hausken in the 100 Backstroke and the team took 2nd at Districts. Our Cheer team also finished their season with a 8th place finish at state, and along with them our Dance team brought home a fourth place trophy. And as we wrap up the winter sports, our girl’s basketball team had a record of 11-10, and when all were healthy, played very well! And last but not least we had our boy’s basketball team who participated in the inaugural Fitz Memorial in Spokane at the start of the year, and ended their season at the regional playoffs against University Spokane. The boys finished their season with a 14-9 record!

With spring sports underway, our school is ready to start bringing home some more state trophies! GOODLUCK TO ALL SPRING SPORTS!
