Hello, my name is Lily Karges and I am a senior at Holy Names Academy in Seattle, WA. Sports have always been really important to me, especially in a school setting, because of the bonds one can make with teammates. This Fall I started preseason swim team, and so far it has been great! I have been on varsity swim team all four years at Holy Names, but this is my first year doing preseason. We have fifteen girls on our preseason team which is drastically smaller than our normal season swim team with about ninety girls, so it is a pretty close knit group. The practices for swimming are at 5 AM before school every day, so I have definitely been practicing time management skills when it comes to college apps, homework and getting to sleep at a reasonable hour.

Last Saturday on October 20th we had our first swim meet of the season, which is interesting because for the rest of the teams at the swim meet it was their last meet of the season. The meet was very fun though, it is called the Northwest Catholic Invitational and there were four other Catholic high schools participating in the meet. Holy Names won overall by nine points, so we are looking forward and excited about a great season ahead.

Swimming has been such a good way for me to stay active and productive this Fall, and I’m so thankful for all the girls on my team who are making it such a great experience. On top of swimming this week we are also in the midst of a fundraiser for the Jubilee Women’s Center on Capitol Hill in Seattle. Each homeroom has been collecting tube socks, feminine products, and used articles of women’s clothing to donate to the Jubilee Center. This is a rehabilitation center for women who have struggled with drug abuse or homelessness and are now trying to get back on their feet and look for jobs in the community. It is a great place for women to get support from one another, members of St. Joseph parish, and other members of the community. I am really excited about the progress our school has made in helping these women be successful.

I can’t wait to see what the rest of the swim season and school year will bring for me, thanks for reading!
