WIAA Names Thomas Jefferson’s Turner, East Valley’s Schreier as September's Student Spotlights
9/25/2015
RENTON – The WIAA is pleased to announce Thomas Jefferson’s Kenneth Turner and East Valley’s (Yakima) Shelby Schreier as the first "Student Spotlight" honorees. The monthly “Student Spotlight” is a campaign dedicated to highlighting two student participant success stories from around the state and works in conjunction with the WIAA’s new Activities Matter website.
Turner is a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School in Auburn and was awarded WIAA Athlete of the Week honors after scoring 32 of the Raiders’ 33 points in a close win against Puyallup. Turner has continued to light up the gridiron as he has racked up 434 rushing yards, 99 receiving yards and threw a touchdown in a performance against Kentwood.
Schreier is a senior at East Valley High School in Yakima. In the opening jamboree, Schreier recorded 22 digs, 21 kills and nine blocks. Schreier, a team captain, has led her team to a 3-1 record so far this season, and hopes to help the Red Devils return to the 2A Volleyball State Championship in November.
For full write-ups about the two student-participates please visit the Activities Matter website.
The Activities Matter website was launched at the beginning of the 2015 school year and is designed to be a resource for member schools and their communities to support the case for interscholastic sports and activities. Activities Matter consolidates a variety of dynamic resources, programs, and original content to highlight the long-term benefits associated with student participation in sports and activities.
The individuals featured in the "Student Spotlights" are selected from the pool of Athlete of the Week winners.
