WIAA Names Rochester MS's Hannah Rodeheaver and Mt. Adams MS's Kupkana Leavitt as "Give Me 5" Star Students of the Month
4/3/2017

The WIAA is pleased to announce Rochester  Middle School’s Hannah Rodeheaver and Mt. Adams Middle School’s Kupkana Leavitt  as the April “Give Me 5” Star Students of the Month.

Rodeheaver is a seventh grader at Rochester Middle School in Rochester, Wash. She is a three sport athlete participating in basketball, volleyball and this spring she will be running track.

Beyond participating in activities, Rodeheaver volunteers at the Hampton Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Tumwater where she prepares meals and spends quality time with the senior citizens. She is also part of the leadership group at Rochester, spending her free time preparing for things like the Thanksgiving Feast, Winter Fest and facilitation of coin drives to raise money for Leukemia Awareness.

Rodeheaver is not only an athlete, leader and volunteer, but she is also a student of the arts. Meeting three times weekly before school starts, Rodeheaver is a member of Rochester’s jazz band.

“Hannah shows a great deal of leadership with her teammates,” said Rochester Athletic Director Jerry Striegel. “A very good student, Hannah displays a great work ethic in her first year of Volleyball. She shows real respect for her teammates by bringing treats with a note of encouragement for each of her teammates prior to every contest.”

“The motto of Rochester Middle School is the 3Rs, ‘Respect, Responsible and Ready’ and Hannah demonstrates all of those on a daily basis”.

Leavitt is an eighth grader at Mt. Adams Middle School in White Swan, Wash. He is a three sport athlete participating in baseball, basketball and football and is a volunteer in numerous community organizations.

Besides being an agent of change in the culture of Mt. Adams’ athletic program, Leavitt has had a huge impact in the local community. He volunteers to assist the Yakama Nation homeless, helps deliver gifts and food to less fortunate families for Yakama Nation Employees Club and participates in community walks, clean up and annual ceremonies honoring the Nez Perce Chief Red Heard Band at Fort Vancouver.

“Whether he is winning or losing, Kupkana always shows honor and treats everyone with respect,” said Cesar Hernandez, Mt. Adams Athletic Director.

Showing tremendous growth from seventh grade to eighth grade, Kupkana has become a leader that his teammates and classmates look to for motivation and direction.

“He understands the concept of teamwork and is always striving to better himself and help those around him. Some of the most courageous moments he has had are when he owns up to his own mistakes,” said Hernandez.

The students will be featured on the Activities Matter and the Middle Level websites. The monthly campaign is dedicated to highlighting two middle school students that demonstrate the core principles of the program: honor, sportsmanship, courage, respect, and citizenship.
