The WIAA has extended the deadline for the L.E.A.P. Committee applications to Wednesday, May 19, 2010. This is the first year that the application deadline has been in the spring. Because of this, the WIAA wants to make sure students have an adequate opportunity to apply.
High school students (who will be juniors in the 2010-11 school year) who exhibit leadership qualities and who are involved in athletics and activities are encouraged to apply. Applications can be found by going to www.wiaa.com. The application should be sent along with a one page explanation of the importance of athletics and activities in schools, three letters of recommendation from teachers, coaches administrators or advisors and a video personal statement where the student describes himself or herself and why he or she wants to be a part of the L.E.A.P. Committee.
L.E.A.P. (Leadership through Education, Activities, and Personal Development), is a student leadership group organized by the WIAA. The L.E.A.P. Committee is made up of student leaders from WIAA member schools throughout the state. Student representatives are involved with WIAA events, meetings and community projects, and have the unique opportunity to be the voice of Washington’s nearly 230,000 student-participants.
The WIAA will select a group of six students entering their junior year in the 2010-11 school year to join the L.E.A.P. Committee. Students participate as Committee members throughout their junior and senior years. The summer after their junior year, Committee members have the opportunity to attend the National Federation of High Schools Student Leadership Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana.
