|Coins for a Cause|
Coins for a Cause was established in 2009 by the WIAA's LEAP Committee as an initiative to raise funds for local non-profit organizations at WIAA State Championships.
In its inaugural year, Coins for a Cause raised over $2,800 for Special Olympics Washington at the 3A and 4A State Basketball Championships. The LEAP students organized a coin collection competition during halftime of each game. Students were selected from each of the participating schools and competed to see who could raise the most money among their fans.
Coins for a Cause has become an annual feature of the Gridiron Classic (State Football) and the Hardwood Classic (State Basketball). As of the spring of 2015, Coins for a Cause has raised nearly $35,000 for organizations such as Special Olympics Washington, Northwest Harvest and InvestEd.
In 2015, the LEAP students raised nearly $6,000 during Coins for a Cause.
