DICK LANGUM

ADMINISTRATOR & CONTRIBUTOR

CLASS OF 2015 INDUCTEE

Dick dedicated more than 30 years to education, serving as a teacher, coach, athletic director, assistant principal, principal, and superintendent in the Monroe, Colfax, and Cashmere school districts.

In 1984, he expanded his work in education by joining Canfield and Associates, a third-party administrative group supporting the insurance needs of schools, cities, counties, and nonprofit agencies. His lifelong commitment has been to ensuring safe environments for students, particularly in athletics. His expertise in risk management and concussion awareness made him a trusted resource for coaches, athletic directors, and administrators across the state.

Dick played an active role in advancing safety in youth sports. He served on numerous committees, presented at conferences and workshops, and shared critical guidance on facilities, equipment, and head injury prevention. His leadership with Canfield helped school districts take a more proactive approach to risk management and student safety.

A key part of his work focused on concussion awareness. Collaborating closely with Canfield’s risk management and claims departments, he was a strong advocate and contributing author of the Zackery Lystedt Law, which set the national standard for concussion safety in youth sports. Even after the law’s passage in 2009, he continued advising and supporting states across the country in developing their own youth concussion legislation.

Dick’s contributions have been widely recognized, including receiving the Curt and Chee Chee Bruskland Award in 2008 for outstanding service to Washington schools in athletics and activities. Even in retirement, he remains a passionate advocate for school safety, leaving a legacy that continues to influence how student-athletes are protected today.
