Frank Ahern was a revered figure in Seattle athletics, a true legend whose coaching career spanned an astonishing seven decades. After graduating from O’Dea High School, Ahern played two years of basketball at Washington State University before beginning a lifetime of service to young athletes. He taught 13 subjects and contributed to more than 20 state championships in basketball, cross country, and track and field. While finishing his coursework at Seattle University, he launched his coaching career as an assistant basketball coach at Seattle Prep in 1948. Just four years later, he became head coach, and by 1954 he had secured his first state title.

In 1958, Ahern moved to Franklin High School, where he expanded his impact across multiple sports, capturing a state championship in cross country in 1964. During the 1970s, he made his mark at Asa Mercer Junior High, where his basketball teams achieved an incredible run of 68 consecutive victories.

Over the course of his career, Ahern coached at Franklin, Cleveland, Asa Mercer Junior High, Seattle Community College, O’Dea, Highline Community College, and Garfield. Along the way, he mentored future stars such as Terry Metcalf, Jawann Oldham, Joyce Walker, and Lamar Hurd. His former player Jim Harney, who went on to star at Seattle University alongside Elgin Baylor, once said, “Frank is the finest teacher of fundamentals of sport that I know of in the state of Washington.”

His contributions were recognized with inductions into the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame, the Washington State Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame, and the Seattle Prep High School Hall of Fame. Beyond the wins and championships, Ahern was celebrated for his unwavering dedication to youth and his belief in the transformative power of sports.

Ahern and his wife, Dona, married in 1958 and raised six children — Theresa, Rosemary, Jeanne, Paul, Ruth, and Mary — building a family legacy as enduring as his coaching career.
