Jerry Penney first distinguished himself as a gymnast at Washington State University, where the move known as the “Penney German” was named in his honor. Following his competitive career, Penney served as an assistant coach at WSU under Bob Peavy during the 1969–70 season.

He then dedicated himself to teaching and coaching at Sammamish High School, where he has led both the boys’ and girls’ gymnastics programs for over 30 years. During his tenure, Penney has been named High School Coach of the Year three times by the Gymnastics Coaches Association and was also honored as High School Regional Coach of the Year. In addition to coaching, he has managed gymnastics district meets for more than three decades, served as the WIAA State Gymnastics Meet manager for 19 years, and acted as floor manager for 16 years.

Dean Ratliff, WIAA state tournament officials coordinator, noted, “I can think of few people that have shown the dedication of Mr. Penney to both his current athletes, former athletes, to his program and to the sport of gymnastics.” In recognition of his contributions, Penney was inducted into the Washington State Gymnastics Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2001 and named KingCo League Coach of the Year in 2010.
