Pasco HS

John dedicated 30 years to teaching math and computers at Pasco High School, where he also coached basketball, track and field, and organized the school’s first cross country team. Beyond the classroom, he made a lasting impact as both a coach and official, refereeing basketball at local and state levels and playing a central role in advancing cross country and track and field in Washington.

He was instrumental in bringing the State Cross Country Championships to Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco, serving as meet manager from 1988 to 2003 before transitioning to results manager. He also managed the State Track and Field Championships (2003–2008) and directed the Pasco Invitational for more than four decades, after first volunteering with the event in 1965.

Known for his love of numbers and statistics, John developed programs for compiling athletic results that became invaluable to sports across the state. His innovations in scoring and data management supported not only cross country and track and field, but also football, basketball, and wrestling, influencing hundreds of events at the state, regional, and community levels.

John’s vision for a premier environment for track and cross country in the Tri-Cities was built on volunteerism and community support—an effort that continues to thrive today. His leadership has shaped generations of athletes and coaches while ensuring that events are executed with precision and care.

His contributions have been recognized with induction into the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame (1998), the C.J. Mitchell Special Contributor Award (2003), and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington State Track and Field Coaches Association (2008). In 2008, the track at Edgar Brown Memorial Stadium in Pasco was named in his honor, cementing his legacy as a tireless advocate for high school athletics in Washington.
