JOSEPH GRAY

ATHLETE

CLASS OF 2023 INDUCTEE

Lakes HS Cross Country & Track & Field

Joseph Gray graduated from Lakes High School in 2002 with the resume of an already distinguished runner. As a cross country and track and field athlete, Gray’s youth accomplishments set the stage for a groundbreaking running career.

He first showed his prowess in cross country, taking 22nd place as a sophomore in the State Meet before making an impressive leap to 2nd as a junior and finishing top-10 as a senior.

Gray’s achievements in track and field were equally eye-opening, as he took 3rd place in the 3200 meters as a senior in 2002. His early successes were just the beginning of what turned out to be an unprecedented athletic career.

Gray’s journey continued at the collegiate level, where he competed first for the Pilots of the University of Portland, followed by the Cowboys of Oklahoma State, where he made an immediate impact. Gray contributed to the university’s top-10 NCAA Nationals Cross Country Championships teams in both 2005 and 2006, demonstrating his versatility and stamina as a National Championship competitor in the Steeplechase — a precursor to his ensuing professional exploits. Gray also earned honors as an NCAA All-Academic Track & Field athlete in 2007.

After college, Gray took his talents to the trails. Since the start of his multi-decade career, Gray has left an indelible mark on the sport of mountain running. His dominance generated international recognition, culminating in recognition as the “Greatest Mountain Runner of All Time,” as voted upon by his peers.

A 33-time USA National Team member, Gray clinched the USA Mountain Running National Champion title eight times between 2009 and 2019 and was named USA Mountain Runner of the Year 11 times. In 2009, he broke ground as the first Black American to win the USA National Mountain Running Championships and make the USA National Mountain Running Team, adding to his pages-long resume.

Gray is equally recognized for his off-track contributions, especially his commitment to fostering diversity in a sport with previously limited inclusivity. Through the “Inspire Diversity” project, Gray aims to create opportunities for minorities in distance running, as he continues his lifelong dedication to equity in athletic recognition. His stance against performance-enhancing drugs and his advocacy for integrity in sports reinforce his role as a model athlete.

Gray’s induction into the WIAA Hall of Fame is a testament to his character and impact beyond the sports arena. Gray embodies the spirit of giving back and using one’s platform to break down systems of inequity. His legacy is one of excellence, resilience, and altruism, inspiring countless individuals both within and outside the sporting world.
