Keith Gilbertson Sr., affectionately known as “Gilby,” devoted more than six decades to teaching, coaching, and mentoring student-athletes in Snohomish, Washington. A 1945 graduate of Snohomish High School, Gilbertson was a four-sport letterman, earning 10 letters in football, basketball, track, and tennis. He became the first two-time Most Inspirational Football Player at Snohomish and captained the school’s first undefeated football team. Following his graduation from Washington State University in 1950, Gilbertson returned to Snohomish to begin a 61-year career shaping athletics and education.

Gilbertson served as head coach for football, track and field, and cross-country, demonstrating advanced knowledge of weight training, speed, and strength development that was ahead of his time. He guided countless athletes to state, national, and world records in track and field, and led the Snohomish Cross Country team to two state championships in 1960 and 1965. He also contributed as an assistant coach in boys basketball during the Panthers’ 1970 state championship season and in football during title runs in 1976 and 1978. Even after retiring from full-time coaching in 1981, Gilbertson volunteered for another 30 years as an assistant coach in football, basketball, and girls’ basketball, including the team’s two state final appearances in 2005 and 2009. Over his lifetime, he participated in 389 Panther football victories as a player or coach.

Gilbertson’s excellence and dedication were recognized through numerous honors, including the Snohomish Junior Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year (1961), Everett Herald Coach of the Year (1963), Washington State Track and Field Federation Award for Outstanding Contributions (1966), Snohomish County Man of the Year (1978), Washington State Coaches Association Football Hall of Fame (1985), WSCA Cross Country Hall of Fame (1994), Snohomish High School Hall of Fame for Excellence in Education (1994), Ronald L. Kelley Memorial Award from the College of Education at WSU (1994), John R. Wooden Coaches Wall of Honor (2006), and Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame (2011). In 2011, the Snohomish High School sports and fitness center was named in his honor.

Gilbertson’s influence extended far beyond athletics. He was known for his relentless pursuit of knowledge, his willingness to help any athlete regardless of school affiliation, and his lifelong devotion to sports. Through his guidance, mentorship, and example, Keith Gilbertson Sr. left a lasting legacy in Washington athletics and education.
