Linda Sheridan built one of the most remarkable coaching legacies in Washington state history, winning a combined 849 games and matches in volleyball and basketball at Shadle Park High School in Spokane. Known affectionately as “Squat” by her players, Linda was remembered as a positive, energetic, and deeply personal coach who constantly preached effort, teamwork, and unselfishness in pursuit of team goals. More importantly, she taught her players to dream—and to dream big.

During her 24 seasons as Shadle Park’s volleyball coach, Linda’s teams compiled a 482-99 record, captured 10 Greater Spokane League titles, and qualified for the State Tournament 19 times. Under her leadership, Shadle Park won State Championships in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1993. Twice her teams finished third and twice they placed fourth, but it was her 1993 squad that left a historic mark as the first team to win a State Tournament without dropping a single game.

Her success extended to the basketball court as well. Over 20 seasons, Linda guided Shadle Park to a 367-123 record, seven Greater Spokane League titles, and 13 State Tournament appearances. Her 1988 and 1989 teams claimed back-to-back State Championships, while her 1981 team earned a runner-up finish.

In total, Linda’s programs reached 32 State Tournaments, won 17 league championships, and captured seven State Titles—achievements that made her the winningest coach in Spokane prep history, male or female.

Linda’s impact stretched far beyond the scoreboard. In recognition of her achievements and influence, the gymnasium at Shadle Park High School was named in her honor. She was also inducted into the Inland Empire Sports Hall of Fame, Washington State University’s Sports Hall of Fame, and the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame, and she was a recipient of the Pathfinder Award from the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport.
