Mark Rypien
ATHLETE
CLASS OF 2006 INDUCTEE
Shadle Park HS Football, Basketball, Baseball
Mark Rypien, a graduate of Shadle Park High School, was one of the most outstanding athletes to emerge from his region. On the baseball field, he earned All Greater Spokane League honors, was named team MVP, and was selected to the All-State team. During his junior season, he led his team to the state finals, and in his senior year, he guided them to a state championship.
Mark also excelled on the basketball court. As a two-time All-GSL selection, he helped Shadle win the state title during his senior year and earned team MVP and All-State honors. However, football became his strongest sport. He played a key role on two GSL championship teams during his junior and senior seasons, earned team MVP, was named to the All-GSL team, and received All-State recognition. Mark also achieved All-American status from Parade Magazine, finishing his high school career with GSL records that ranked among the top 10 nationally.
Perhaps his most remarkable accomplishment was being named All-State in three different sports during his senior year. For these achievements, he was honored as the Hertz Athlete of the Year.
After high school, Mark attended Washington State University, where his athletic career continued to flourish. In 1986, he was drafted by the Washington Redskins, enjoyed multiple successful seasons in the NFL, and earned MVP honors in the 1992 Super Bowl. He also received Pro Bowl recognition twice.
