Yelm HS Track & Field

Patsy (Walker) Pointer’s historic career at Yelm High School culminated in a 1977 team State Track and Field Championship where she scored all of her team’s 40 points, winning all four individual events in which she was entered. Pointer notched wins in the 220-yard dash, 80-yard hurdles, high jump and long jump to become the first woman to win four individual events.

Pointer set seven school records during her career at Yelm and still holds records in the 400, 200, shot put, high jump, and long jump. The State Championship Meet record in the long jump, which she set in 1977, is the longest standing State Championship record of any event.

In addition to her State Championship title, Pointer was also a 1977 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Champion in the Women’s Pentathlon.

After high school, Pointer went to on to compete at UCLA and Houston University. As a senior at University of Houston, she won the 1981 NCAA Heptathlon (outdoor) and Pentathlon (indoor) championships. From 1981 to 1984, she was regularly among the top 4 finishers on the U.S. Team behind other greats like Jackie Joyner and Jane Frederick. Pointer still holds the University of Houston women’s pentathlon record, set in 1981.
