PHIL CARTER

ATHLETE

CLASS OF 2005 INDUCTEE

Wilson HS Football, Wrestling, Track & Field

A 1979 graduate of Wilson High School, Phil Carter excelled across multiple sports, establishing himself as one of the state’s premier athletes. He earned two varsity letters in wrestling, placing sixth at the state meet as a junior, and three letters in track, where he captured a state championship during his junior year and finished fourth in the 4×400 relay.

It was on the football field, however, where Carter’s legacy truly shined. A three-year letterman, he was twice named an All-City performer and became a two-time recipient of the Norm Mayer Award, given to the city’s best player. In 1998, the Seattle Times recognized him as one of the ten best running backs in state history.

Carter went on to play football at the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a scholarship and finished his career as the fifth-leading rusher in school history before graduating in 1983. Beyond athletics, he dedicated his career to serving his community, working for many years with the YMCA. He served as the downtown Tacoma YMCA Director before becoming Executive Director of the Mel Korum YMCA in Puyallup, Washington.
