Steve Escame dedicated decades to coaching Washington state high school athletes, leaving a lasting mark across multiple sports. From 1969 to 1991, he guided speech and debate teams to numerous state qualifiers and champions, while also coaching volleyball for 12 seasons and achieving eight winning campaigns.

Escame’s greatest success came in tennis, where he led teams at Foster and Decatur High Schools to a combined record of 517-156 over 34 years. His players captured 20 league and division championships, and he was honored as Coach or co-Coach of the Year 18 times. Under his guidance, Foster won one team championship, and Decatur captured two.

Beyond victories, Escame’s greatest legacy was the development of his athletes, preparing over 100 students to compete at the next level. From novices to state champions, he emphasized character, sportsmanship, and dedication, earning admiration from athletes, coaches, and administrators alike.
