STEVEN MCKENZIE
CONTRIBUTOR
CLASS OF 2012 INDUCTEE
Selkirk HS
Steven McKenzie graduated from Selkirk High School in 1986 and became a constant and beloved figure in the Rangers’ athletic programs. His spirit and passion for his school allowed him to serve as Team Manager for nearly every sport offered at Selkirk.
He began in 1984 as the Team Manager and Coaches’ Assistant for the boys and girls varsity basketball teams, a role he held for 28 years. During his sophomore year, he also managed the baseball team until his graduation, and he spent his final two years of high school as the football team manager. In 2007, he expanded his service once again, joining the fastpitch staff as Team Manager and Coaches’ Assistant.
McKenzie’s impact went far beyond keeping scorebooks or managing equipment. He welcomed visiting teams and officials, escorted them to locker rooms, and made sure they had everything they needed. His enthusiasm, reliability, and genuine love for students and the game made him indispensable to the Selkirk athletic community.
His passion for athletics extended into the greater community as well. He volunteered with local softball leagues, youth basketball programs, and numerous community events through the Metalines Chamber of Commerce. He was also a tireless advocate for Special Olympics fundraising, consistently recognized as the top raffle ticket seller in support of the cause.
As an athlete himself, McKenzie proudly competed in the Special Olympics for decades, beginning in 1979. He participated in the 50m, 100m, and 200m walks, the softball throw, and bowling—winning several medals for top-three finishes. His competitive career included participation in the 1995 World Summer Games and continued into the 2000s with bowling.
His legacy was cemented in 2002 when Selkirk High School created the Steven McKenzie Spirit Award, honoring individuals who demonstrated loyalty, support, and dedication to Selkirk athletics. He was also the recipient of the WIAA Sportsmanship Medal at the 2008 2B State Fastpitch Tournament and the WSSAAA Commendation Award in 2007.
“No one on this earth had more school, team, personal, and community spirit than Stevie,” reflected longtime Selkirk coach Rey Villegas. “Life’s challenges were always seen by Stevie as opportunities rather than obstacles.” Nancy Lotze, Superintendent of Selkirk Schools, described him as “a model that we should all strive to emulate.”
McKenzie’s legacy at Selkirk and beyond was defined by loyalty, kindness, and unwavering spirit—qualities that made him a true treasure to his community.
