Virginia Hays devoted nearly four decades to officiating high school sports in Washington, serving as a board member, clinician, and state tournament officials coordinator. Her passion for athletics began during her college years at Western Washington State College (now Western Washington University), where she lettered in volleyball, field hockey, basketball, and softball, and earned a Bachelor of Education in K-12 Physical and Health Education in 1971. She later completed her graduate degree at Washington State University.
Virginia began officiating volleyball in 1972 and quickly became an influential figure in the Central Washington Board of Officials, serving as an assigner for five years and chairing the By-Laws and Constitution Committee for two. She also contributed as a trainer on two separate occasions, helping develop the next generation of officials. Beyond local involvement, Virginia played a critical role at the state level, serving as a WOA Clinician and as the WIAA State 1A Volleyball Tournament Officials Coordinator.
Her contributions extended to multiple WIAA State Championships across basketball, cheer, dance and drill, and softball. She also maintained a connection with the United States Volleyball program, continually refining her skills as a top official. Known for her dedication and love of high school sports, Virginia Hays has made a lasting impact on countless young athletes, officials, and the broader athletic community.
