Walt Thorp devoted more than 50 years to education and athletics in the state of Washington, leaving a lasting legacy of service and leadership. He began his career at Wilson Creek Schools in 1953, where he taught and coached for 16 years, leading boys basketball, boys and girls track, and baseball. Thorp also established the Wilson Creek Junior High sports program, demonstrating early his commitment to developing young athletes and leaders.

After his teaching and coaching years, Thorp served as athletic director for 16 years and principal for 14, before moving to Odessa High School, where he held the roles of principal and athletic director from 1969 to 1983. He was a charter member of the Washington Secondary School Athletic Administrators Association (WSSAAA) Board, representing WIAA District 7, and later served as WSSAAA president and as the organization’s representative at the national conference in Washington, D.C., in 1972.

Throughout his career, Thorp actively contributed to the WIAA District 6 Board and District 7 activities, serving as president and executive secretary for 24 years, as well as Bi-County recording secretary for 25 years. He also assisted as tournament manager at the Boys Basketball State Tournament from 1990 to 1995. For his decades of service, Thorp was recognized with numerous honors, including Bi-County Administrator of the Year (1983-84), WIAA District 7 Administrator of the Year (1982-83), the WIAA Meritorious Service Award (1996), and the Gareth Giles Memorial Award for distinguished service to the youth of Washington.

Walt Thorp’s career reflected an unwavering dedication to students, athletics, and the ideals of fair play and equity, leaving an enduring impact on Washington’s scholastic sports programs.
