|William "Bill" Warner Hays |
Bill coached in the state of Washington from 1957-89. As the football coach at St. John for over 14 years, he led his team to a 110-15-1 record and had a stint of 37 consecutive wins from 1965-68. On the basketball court, Bill’s knack for coaching was even more prominent. Bill boasted an impressive 11 state tournament appearances in 15 years that included being state champions four times, runner-up once, and third place four times. Bill was also the coach of the track team while at St. John.
Bill went on to coach at Newport from 1974-1989. As the boys head coach for three years, the Newport team was 25-20. As the girls head coach for 11 years, they were 169-81 with 7 state tournament appearances. In addition to coaching basketball at Newport, Bill was the co-head coach of the boys and girls track teams. In 1983, he was a nominee for National Girls Track Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association. Many would argue that Bill’s secret to success was discipline. In 1989, Bill was inducted into the Washington Inland Empire Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Washington State Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1990.
