Hello, my name is Julie Wilson and I am a senior at Vashon Island High School. I have been actively involved with cheerleading, wrestling, student government, and mentoring at the elementary school. “The Rock,” as local residents call Vashon Island, lies in the heart of Puget Sound and is always rocking and rolling with activities.

The Volleyball team started the year off well by making school history! For the first time ever at Vashon High School, the volleyball team was district champions. They achieved this feat holding a 12-0 record in league play. Along with being district champions, Vashon hosted the tri-district meet (which it hasn’t hosted since 2000). While Vashon lost to Lynden Christian during the tri-district meet, the community support for the team was wonderful.

As the winter sports season begins for high schoolers around the state, Vashon Rockbusters Junior Wrestling program starts up. With many dedicated elementary and middle school students, the Rockbusters hosted a successful all-day meet in early November.

The high school wrestling team is gearing up for another exciting year. The guys' team is full of new wrestlers who have quickly taken to the sport, with many wrestling this Saturday, December 3rd in Auburn. On the girls’ team, we were lucky enough to get a total of seven girls, making us an official team! It should be another fun year.

Girls basketball is hard at work, gearing up for a successful season, with many girls returning from last year.

Boys basketball had there first home game Wednesday November 30th, coming away with a victory against Rainer Christian. With only four starters returning, some would say it is a rebuilding year. Yet senior guard and captain Dan Lofland is enthusiastic when talking about the upcoming season, “there is a lot of young talent, and I would trust any of them to step into my spot.”

This year, the winter cheerleading squad has decided to step back into the competition arena, creating excitement throughout the squad. “We’re excited to showcase our stunting and show our athleticism. We plan on making pep assemblies more fun,” said senior base Corrine Pruett.

Our musical theatre cast will perform Legally Blonde this year, and the drama department couldn’t be more excited! “[This production] is full of artistic merit, challenge and allows for growth for our actors,” said principal and co-director Susan Hanson. The musical has many female roles, suiting for a musical theatre class with a female majority. Hoping to open sometime in March, students are already hard at work, finding out their roles and learning the script. “We are self-supporting, and this production has been a crowd pleaser in the big stage, so we are hoping to have strong ticket sales,” noted Susan Hanson.

With the gray, rainy Western Washington weather making itself known, Vashon High School is keeping the energy level high in the halls with so many activities going on.

Good luck to the winter athletes around the state. I hope everyone has a  safe and happy holiday season!
