Hopefully everyone had a great holiday season and their New Year is starting out great. My name is Nicole Presho and I am currently a senior at Mary Walker High School, located in Springdale Washington. I spend most my time taking part in sports and school clubs. I play basketball, volleyball, and softball. I am also President of our FFA chapter and the senior class, and take part in our schools FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) National Honors Society and ASB. Let’s just say I always have something going on.
Mary Walker is a small 2B school located in Northeast Washington, which is about 40 miles north of Spokane. Our community is very small, so everyone knows everyone else. It is not just parents and family that come to school events; the whole community comes out to support the Springdale Chargers.

This year our school became a part of the Bi-County sports league which contains such State Champion teams as Colfax, Davenport, Reardan, and Northwest Christian. We have definitely found some new competition.

Our wrestling team has so far been really successful. At tri-state Conan Kalugin placed 6th, which was a pretty tough feat because tri-state wrestling consists of the top wrestlers from every weight classification from 4 states, (I know, it doesn’t make sense considering the tournament name). Also over Christmas break Anfim Kalugin, Conan Kalugin and Zack Lane all won the Central Valley and Rogers tournaments. Finally, last weekend Jesse Nolan, Patrick Anderson, and Zach Lane all finished second at the ACH tournament. We have some very hard working wrestlers and we plan on seeing several of them place at state this year.

Our boys’ basketball team has been fairly successful in the new Bi-County league. They recently had 2 new players transfer from Deer Park who will be a great contribution to the team. The boys are a very fast team and the fans love to watch their upbeat games. With only 4 seniors on varsity they have the chance to become a powerhouse in the Bi-County league in the coming years. We also expect to see them in the running to take part in the State Tournament this year.

Our girls’ basketball team has had a rough start to this season. Last year our basketball team lost 7 of its 10 varsity players leaving a big space to fill with new players. That along with becoming a part of the new Bi- County league has made this season tough. Despite our troubles the Lady Chargers are working hard in every practice and improving every game, putting our hearts out on the floor. We expect the last half of the season to be more of a success than the first half.

Our Cheerleaders have also been working very hard and have been at every game supporting the teams. We have a new cheering section known as the “Chargers Rally Alley,” so they are excited to get some more spirit out of the students.

Aside from sports our school has been busy in other areas. Our FFA has just finished its annual Christmas wreath sale and are now preparing for the plants to arrive for our greenhouse. Due to the profits gained from these fund raisers we have been able to attend the National FFA Convention the last 2 years in a row in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Our FCCLA is busy preparing for Regionals in February. Those who receive gold at regionals will move on to state and have the opportunity to go to Nationals this summer in Anaheim, California and visit Disney Land. Last year Nationals was held in Chicago and all that attended, including me, had a blast! This year my partner Taylor and I are educating the school and community about the importance of self-defense. We hope to be headed to California this summer.

Well I, like all seniors, have had a busy year filling out scholarships and college applications, and am definitely excited to graduate. I hope that everyone has a great rest of their winter sports season and have an exceptional new year.
