  • Memo to Athletic Directors
    9/8/2014

WIAA | Washington Interscholastic Activities Association

    MEMO

    TO: Member School Athletic Directors
    FROM: Mike A. Colbrese

I hope the school year has started well.  The office has been made aware of situations where high school student athletes have or are participating against junior college teams in the sports of baseball and softball. (There may be other sports.)

First of all, participation in these events is a violation of WIAA rule 18.23.0. As stipulated in rule 18.23.5, through this participation, a student “forfeits any remaining high school eligibility in that sport.”

WIAA Rule 18.23.8 provides me with the authority to reinstate a student who has violated this rule, and I am willing to reinstate students on a case-by-case situation. If you have a student(s) in this situation, please send me a request by email that includes the student’s name, grade and a brief description of the event(s) in which he/she participated (dates, site(s), sport(s), and organizer).

This office has contacted the NWACC and Commissioner Marco Azurdia has issued a statement to all NWACC members advising them of WIAA rules and asking the schools to cease and desist with these events.

If you have any information or have any additional concerns, please contact me.

    Take care.
