The award program was created not only to recognize and reward teams that maintained the highest GPA in their sport and classification, but also to acknowledge the teams with GPAs over 3.0.  If a team averages a 3.0-3.49 GPA they qualify for the Distinguished Team Award, while a team with a GPA between 3.50-4.00 receives the Outstanding Team Award.

Schools that win the Academic State Championship also receive points toward their pursuit of the WIAA/National Guard Scholastic Cup, the most prestigious WIAA award given to each school with the best finish in their respective classifications based on athletic competition, academic performance and sportsmanship.

Academic State Champion Teams will be invited to attend the State Championship of their sport where they will be honored.
