QUESTONS AND ANSWERS

SUMMER ACTIVITIES
Q: What about any summer activities?

Q: Does the WIAA have recommendations for establishing summer plans?

Q: Do Zoom meetings in Football count as the 20 summer practices?

Q: If the Governor allows groups to gather prior to June 19, can teams get together off campus?

Q: Can they use school equipment?

A: CURRENT DIRECTION FROM GOVERNMENT INCLUDES SCHOOLS AND CAMPUSES CLOSED THROUGH JUNE 19. WE WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES SET FORTH BY THE GOVERNOR.

SUMMER PROGRAMS ARE ALLOWED BY WIAA RULE, HOWEVER, HAVE SIGNIFICANT OVERSIGHT AT THE LOCAL LEVEL. SCHOOLS WILL NEED TO WORK CLOSELY WITH THEIR RISK MANAGEMENT FOLKS AND SCHOOL BOARD AS IT PERTAINS TO SUMMER PROGRAMS.

WIAA WILL DO OUR BEST TO PROVIDE SOME GUIDANCE AS THE NEXT FEW WEEKS UNFOLD. SCHOOLS HAVE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SUMMER PROGRAMMING PRIOR TO COVID AND IT WOULD BE REASONABLE TO THINK THE SAME FOR THIS SUMMER.

ELIGIBILITY

Q: The big concern of eligibility is the passing of the classes from the prior semester for the fall.  Are students that are unable to get internet access and receive no credit having to appeal due to hardship?

A: WIAA HAS CREATED AN ELIGIBILITY DOCUMENT WITH INTERPRETATIONS OF THE DIFFERENT ELIGIBILITY RULES AS IT RELATES TO COVID-19. THIS DOCUMENT IS GOING TO BE REVIEWED BY THE WIAA EXECUTIVE BOARD AND WILL THEN BE PROVIDED TO THE MEMBERSHIP. OSPI HAS PRESENTED GRADING RECOMMENDATIONS- WIAA TO RESPOND BASED UPON THOSE RECOMMENDATIONS; HARDSHIP APPEAL IS ALWAYS AN OPTION

Q: Concern around students getting access to sports physicals.

A:PHYSICALS ARE ADDRESSED IN THE ELIGIBILITY DOCUMENT THAT HAS BEEN CREATED. JUSTIN IS GOING TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE SMAC COMMITTEE TO REQUEST IDEAS AND SUGGESTIONS TO SUPPORT SCHOOLS.

STATE TOURNAMENTS / BRACKETS FOR 2020-21

Q: Follow-up on earlier questions... the number of teams in each tournament would impact the date we need to end District/League tournaments (and thus league play).  When will those state brackets (not just championship date) be released?

A: WIAA IS TRYING TO FORMALIZE TOURNAMENT FORMATS FOR NEXT YEAR AS SOON AS WE CAN WITH THE FORMAT COMMITTEE. WIAA KNOWS YOU HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DESIGN AND SCHEDULE YOUR REGULAR SEASON AND DISTRICT TOURNAMENT SCHEDULES.

AMENDMENT #6 (COMPETING AGAINST NON-SCHOOL TEAMS

Q: Is there a liability issue with members playing against non members?

A: AFTER COMMUNICATING WITH CLEAR RISK: They would still have coverage. It would be like a member school playing an alumni game. Our members would be covered but the alumni team would need their own insurance.

AMENDMENT #18 (30 SECOND SHOT CLOCK)

Q: Should this amendment be for both high school and middle school?

A: YES

VOLLEYBALL MATCH LIMITS (AMENDMENT #21)

Q: Just a clarifying question in regards to HS #21 volleyball match limits.  Would it be the same situation as it is now with 2 of the 18 dates being tournaments?  Right now volleyball gets 16 playing dates and 2 can be tournaments.

A: YES- Either two one-day tournaments or one two-day.  No change from the previous rule.

FOOTBALL HELMET RECONDITIONING

From Steve Bridge to Everyone

Did get a message from Tony Beam regarding the re-conditioning process regarding football helmets.  With certain states beginning to open up the re-conditioning plants in those states may be re-opening.  He also mentioned if schools have not received their helmets yet, to call your vendor and see if they can be tracted- meaning some may be done and only need to be shipped.  Tony is the Ex Director of NAERA
