RENTON, Wash. - The WIAA, Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires announced Zoie Breland of Fife High School and Rocco Parrish of Grandview High School as the recipients of the eighth annual Smart Choices Scholarship, Friday.

The winners each receive a $5,000 scholarship to the schools of their choice. Breland will attend the University of Washington to pursue a career in nursing next fall while Parrish has aspirations of continue his golf career while earning a degree in secondary education.

In addition to the two $5,000 scholarships, the Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires have teamed up to issue eight $1,000 scholarships to four male and four female finalists.

“Being in the state of Washington, I’ve seen some of the great students that have earned this scholarship over the years,” said WIAA Executive Director Mick Hoffman. “Seeing this year’s applicants and winners has just reaffirmed what remarkable students we have all around the state.”

Breland and the Trojans advanced to the State Soccer tournament three times, including a trip to the quarterfinals during her sophomore season. She earned individual accolades on the pitch, being named an All-League defender during her junior and senior campaigns. In basketball, she qualified for the WIAA State Basketball Tournament during her sophomore and senior seasons.

Breland’s achievements span into the Unified division as well, for which she served as the Club President, founding the chapter during her sophomore year. In the three years since Fife has been involved in Unified Sports, the school has garnered recognition from ESPN and the Specials Olympics, being named one of the top five programs in the nation.

Parrish’s accomplishments in the athletic realm are highlighted by qualifying for the WIAA 2A State Golf Tournament as a freshman, sophomore and junior. He garnered recognition as an All-Conference golfer during his sophomore and junior season and was named CWAC Basketball All-Conference as a junior as well. The Grandview grad made his mark on the football field as well as he now holds the school record for all-time passing yardage.

While he has captained both the football and basketball teams at Grandview, his leadership has stretched outside of sports, serving as a member of high school’s leadership class, the CWAC Sportsmanship Forum and the WIAA LEAP Committee. Parrish has spent his time volunteering for high school and community events and even initiated the “Hometown Showdown” – a weeklong competition dedicated to raising money for blood cancer awareness.

"Les Schwab Tire Centers is committed to providing world-class service for our customers and being good neighbors; we're honored to recognize others who share our commitment to service and in making a difference in our community," said Andy Sherry, regional manager. "It's why for the past 13 years we are proud to partner with the Dairy Farmers of Washington and the WIAA. The Smart Choices Scholarships reward students for outstanding accomplishments in activities, academics and community service."
