WIAA Donates Rights Fees From High School National Tournament to Non-Profits
2/28/2014

RENTON, Wash. – The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) announced the rights fees collected for allowing Rainier Beach to participate in the 2014 Dick’s Sporting Goods High School National Tournament (HSNT) will be donated to local non-profit charities that benefit student-athlete organizations.

The WIAA will receive $2,500 from Paragon Marketing Group once the agreement is signed approving member schools to participate in the HSNT.  The collected fees will be donated to InvestEd, a non-profit that partners with 660 schools and assist more than 16,500 students with small amounts of short-term, item-specific, need-based funding – items such as shoes, coats, glasses, sports equipment, and academic fees. If Rainier Beach High School is selected to participate in the HSNT, the WIAA will receive an additional $7,500 that will be donated to similar non-profit charities benefiting student-athlete programs.

“After the WIAA Executive Board granted the waivers to allow Rainier Beach High School the opportunity to play in the High School National Tournament, we notified the Paragon Market Group and asked to donate the fees to InvestEd,” WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese said.  “This charitable non-profit provides positive encouragement and immediate help for students in needs.”

The WIAA Executive Board also determined in their action that a special committee would be formed to examine the Association’s out-of-season rules.  Members on this committee will represent state school directors, superintendents, principals, athletic administrators and the coaches association.
