WIAA Representative Assembly Passes Six Amendments (with Podcast)

RENTON, Wash. – The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) has announced that six amendments (rule changes) have passed for the 2014-15 school year, which were voted on by the Representative Assembly.

| Of the six passed amendments, three dealt with high schools only. Amendment 17.5.8D allows high school coaches the opportunity to coach a graduating senior in an All-American contest. Passed amendment 57.7.0 changes the running clock procedures in football. An official’s timeout will no longer stop the clock. Passed amendment 66.3.0 raises the individual wrestling match limit to 45. An individual may not wrestle on more than 16 dates prior to the state-qualifying tournament, but the amount of matches have increased by 12.
There were three amendments that concerned both the middle school and high school levels. Based on amendment 17.5.1, Unified sports teams will now be considered separate and distinct sports, which allow student-athletes to participate on a unified sports team and on a high school or middle school sports team. Amendment 17.28.1 allows student-athletes the opportunity to participate in a jamboree following eight days of practice. Amendment 18.23.0 allows unattached students to compete against professional and college athletes in the sports of bowling, cross country, golf, gymnastics, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field and wresting.
The Representative Assembly also selected three Executive Board members. Harlan Kredit of Lynden Christian will remain the representative of District 1, while Tim Thomsen of the Sumner School District and Greg Whitmore of Lind-Ritzville were approved as District 3 and District 7 members, respectively.
The Representative Assembly is comprised of 53 (35 high school, 18 middle school) school administrators from each of the nine WIAA districts. For an amendment to pass, 60 percent approval is needed from the voting members of the Assembly.
