Initial Basketball RPI Released
1/6/2017
RENTON, Wash. – The WIAA announced the initial Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) standings for the 2016-17 boys and girls basketball season, Friday, Jan. 6.
The rankings, which will be updated on a daily basis on the WIAA website throughout the regular season, will be used to seed qualifiers for the 2017 Hardwood Classic. To see the full list of rankings by classification, click HERE.
The formula used to rank schools is comprised of three weighted sections – winning percentage (25 percent), opponent’s winning percentage (50 percent) and the opponents’ opponent’s winning percentage (25 percent).
The RPI is powered by data collected by MaxPreps, the official digital media partner of the WIAA. It is the responsibility of WIAA member schools to manage their schedules and scores using MaxPreps.
An RPI system was approved by the WIAA Executive Board in September of 2016 after a survey of school administrators and basketball coaches found that stakeholders favored an RPI system to seed the State Championships during the 2016-17 season.
The WIAA formed an RPI committee in December which will continuously monitor the current formula throughout the season and provide input for necessary changes in future years. The committee, consisting of athletic directors and coaches representing every WIAA classification and district, will also oversee the implementation of an RPI to other team sports as necessary.
