Few individuals have had a more profound and lasting impact on the health and safety of student-athletes than Dr. Stanley A. Herring. A renowned physician, educator, and tireless advocate, Dr. Herring is being inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Hall of Fame for his extraordinary contributions to youth sports safety—contributions that have resonated far beyond Washington state.

On May 14th, 2009, a monumental moment in youth sports history occurred when Governor Christine Gregoire signed the Zackery Lystedt Law. Dr. Herring was a principal in this legislative effort: the first of its kind in the United States, designed to protect young athletes from the potentially devastating effects of sports-related concussions and head injuries. As he walked out of the Governor’s office that day, Dr. Herring offered a simple but powerful statement: “Now the work begins.” And indeed, it did.

The Lystedt Law required immediate removal of any participant suspected of sustaining a concussion and prohibited return to play without clearance from a qualified medical professional. With just 30 days before fall sports began, the WIAA undertook the immense task of implementing these new safety standards statewide- educating coaches, administrators, parents, athletes, and even non-school athletic groups using school facilities. At the heart of this effort was Dr. Herring, who led the charge to train and retrain this broad group of stakeholders, reshaping the very foundation of concussion awareness and care in school athletics.

From research to publishing and distributing educational materials to presenting at clinics and conventions, Dr. Herring’s leadership never wavered. He brought clarity, urgency, and compassion to a complex public health challenge. At the 2015 WSSAAA State Convention, he was rightfully introduced as “The Heavy Lifter” for his relentless work not only in Washington, but across the country and internationally. His voice has been instrumental in shaping concussion laws that are now in place in all 50 states and the District of Columbia

A former longtime team physician for the Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Mariners, Dr. Herring’s work spans all levels of athletic competition, but his
heart has always been with student athletes. He has served as a member of the WIAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee for many years while continuing to teach courses for its members. One unforgettable moment came during a WIAA Coaches School presentation when Dr. Herring invited Zack, the young athlete whose traumatic brain injury inspired the law bearing his name, to speak to the crowd. The emotional impact of that moment underscored the real-world significance of Dr. Herring’s work.

Through decades of tireless advocacy, groundbreaking research, and personal commitment, Dr. Stanley A. Herring has changed the game—not just in how we treat concussions, but in how we value and protect our young athletes.
