Newport HS Basketball & Soccer
Annette J. Duvall attended Newport High School in Bellevue from 1977 to 1980, elevating the Knights’ basketball and soccer teams to new levels of dominance.
During her high school years, Duvall led the basketball programs to a KingCo and West Central District Championship before taking 7th place in the State Tournament in 1978. On the soccer pitch, she carved through opposing defenses, leading all of KingCo in scoring during the 1980 season.
For her excellence on and off the court, Duvall was recognized as part of the “Golden Girls” by the Seattle Times in 1981, highlighting Washington’s best female athletes since the initial enactment of Title IX legislation. She was also mentioned as a member of “The Exceptional 18,” which highlights outstanding single-sport girls prep stars for high school and college soccer.
Throughout high school, Duvall earned six varsity letters for the Knights: three in basketball and three in soccer. She was named First-Team All-League in soccer during the 1979-80 season and in basketball in 1980. That year, she was awarded Most Inspirational Player by her basketball team and was Journal American’s runner-up for Prep Female Athlete of the Year.
In college, Duvall attended Bellevue Community College and Western Washington University. She won the Northwest College Women’s Sports Association Regional Tournament in 1982 and 1983, and tacked on NAIA District 1 Championship victories in both 1983 and 1984.
At WWU, Duvall set records for goals in a game (6), goals in a season (28 in 1983), goals in a career (61 from 1982-1984), and consecutive games with a goal scored (22 from 1982-1983). She was an NAIA All-American in 1982. For her illustrious career, Duvall was named to the WWU All-Decade Women’s Soccer Team for 1980-1989 and became the 10th woman to enter the WWU Hall of Fame in 1994. A member of Western’s All-Century Team, Duvall contributed to the Vikings’ 42-3 record during her three-year career, including a stretch of 38 wins in a row.
Professionally, Duvall played abroad in Australia and New Zealand in the summer of 1980, In the United States, she won U.S.S.F. Region 4 and National Soccer Championships with F.C. Lowenbrau Club in Chicago in 1982. Duvall also helped FC Cozars Club finish first in the U.S.S.F. Region 4 Championship before taking second nationally.
Duvall has also been a trailblazer for female athletes as part of the first cycle of Washington State Title IX participants. She has served as an athlete, coach, and athletic director, including her role as the AD at Cleveland HS. Duvall is praised for her hard work, integrity, sportsmanship, and pioneering spirit, marking her as a significant figure in the advancement of women’s sports across the state.
