TIM STEVENS
OFFICIAL
CLASS OF 2022 INDUCTEE
Tim Stevens’ contributions to the WIAA go beyond his expertise as an official, attention to detail as a tournament director, or even his influence as an administrator for the Washington Officials Association (WOA). Since before the turn of the 20th century, Stevens has helped the WIAA progress through the widespread transition to an online world.
As the WIAA’s Director of Technology from 1999-2009, Stevens helped condense the association’s previously detached series of static pages into the fully data-driven website that still exists today. In turn, he helped transition seasonal sports clinics from an in-person to online format for both officials and coaches. Stevens also offered his online knowledge nationally as a member of the NFHS Technology Committee.
At the ground level, Stevens busied himself in the hands-on inner workings of the association. As director of soccer, baseball, and wrestling tournaments at all levels, Stevens left his mark on a wide variety of events for student-athletes around Washington state. But Stevens’ widest-reaching, most in-depth impact has taken place through officiating.
From the football field to the executive board, Stevens has always been quick to lend a hand wherever he’s needed. Since the late 1990s, he’s carried out multiple administrative duties for the WOA, serving on the Board of Directors for multiple sports’ officials associations. As a clinician, Stevens offers feedback on and directs the creation of new and improved courses, both online and in-person.
The chair of the WOA Retention and Training Committee since 2015, Stevens has played an integral role in recruiting and maintaining refs throughout Washington. In an era where officials have become harder and harder to find, Stevens continues to train and retain valuable people to help put on games for young athletes all over the area.
While his expertise ranges across sports and activities, Stevens specializes as an umpire on the baseball diamond. On a national level, Stevens served as Section 8 Representative to the NFHS National Baseball Rules Committee from 2014-2018, also representing, by assignment, the state of Washington for rules surveys by the NFHS for officials.
Since 1996, he’s served as the 3A/4A State Tournament Umpire-in-Chief, providing critical input on the state of the tournament grounds and on-field officiating assignments. When he’s not standing behind the plate himself, he’s selecting other Umpires-in-Chief, providing communication on game situations, protests, and other areas of concern.
For his extensive body of work, Stevens has collected a tall stack of accolades. In 1999, the WOA named him Umpire of the Year. Between 2000 and 2002, he received the Northwest Baseball Umpires Association (NBUA) Distinguished Service Award, the NFHS Section 8 Baseball Umpire of the Year, and the NBUA’s Award for Outstanding Service.
In 2020, the WOA inducted Stevens into its Hall of Fame. Now, for his work on the field and behind the scenes, the WIAA is proud to add another Hall of Fame plaque to Stevens’ collection.
