Denny Humphrey, a 1958 graduate of Reardan High School who also attended Valley High School for three years, excelled in basketball, football, and baseball throughout his prep career. He continued his athletic pursuits at Spokane Community College, playing basketball under Coach Hank Coplen, and earned an education degree from Eastern Washington State College in 1968.

Humphrey began his coaching career at LaCrosse High School, where he spent four years as head basketball and track coach, and served as an assistant football coach before taking over as head football coach for three seasons. He then moved to Chewelah High School, coaching basketball for a year and assisting in football and track, followed by a seven-year tenure at Ritzville High School as head basketball and track coach, also assisting in football. At Ritzville, he had the opportunity to coach his oldest son, Jay. Humphrey concluded his high school coaching career with 22 years at Cheney High School, mentoring his son Rhett during his time on the team, and later served for four years on the basketball coaching staff at Eastern Washington University.

A highly decorated coach, Humphrey was named Frontier Coach of the Year, Border League Coach of the Year multiple times, and District Seven Coach of the Year in 1986. He ranks as the fourth-winningest basketball coach in Washington with 552 career wins. His teams were renowned for their defensive strength, allowing the fewest points in league play in 21 of his 34 seasons. Humphrey’s squads captured 13 league titles, eight district titles, and advanced to state playoffs 16 times, finishing as state runner-up twice. Over his career, 24 teams reached districts and 16 made state tournaments, culminating in 30 winning seasons. He also served three years on the District Seven Basketball Advisory Committee and has been honored with the Inland Empire Sports Broadcasters 25-Year Service Award, as well as induction into the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.
