JIM FREEMAN
COACH
CLASS OF 2019 INDUCTEE
Mount Baker HS Cross Country, Girls Basketball, Track & Field
When describing Jim Freeman’s impact as a high school track, cross country, and girls’ basketball coach, a variety of adjectives come to mind. “Illustrious” would be one. “Unrivaled” would be another. But for those who actually participated on Freeman’s squads, a different set of adjectives feels more accurate — words like “enduring,” “welcoming,” and “community-centered.”
Throughout 95 combined seasons across five different sports at Mount Baker High School, Freeman created welcoming atmospheres of complete camaraderie, cherishing each athlete’s contributions equally. A standout runner himself at Western Washington University in the early 1960s, Freeman refused to allow his top competitors any special treatment, showing zero tolerance for even the slightest hint of arrogance or entitlement.
Not surprisingly, that type of equitable treatment attracted runners of all abilities. As the sense of community surrounding his squads grew, so did their success. In 1998, Freeman retired after 22 years coaching the Mount Baker girls’ cross country team and 26 years with the boys. In 48 collective seasons, he led his teams to 36 league, 14 district, and five State Titles, compiling a combined 230-42 record in dual meets.
During his 24 years as the boys’ track coach, Freeman helped develop 18 individual State Champions en route to three State Titles. In four years coaching the girls’ team, he worked alongside two more individual State champs. By the end of his career, at least one athlete earned a medal in every State Championship meet event.
After such accomplishments, Freeman’s name now resides in both the State Cross Country and State Track and Field Halls of Fame. Nearly five decades after he started coaching, the 1980s’ Whatcom County Coach of the Decade is still remembered for his inspiring integrity and enduring support. It is with great honor that the WIAA adds Jim Freeman’s plaque to its Hall of Fame.
