CLASS OF 2019 INDUCTEE
Bruce Brown’s 35 years as a teacher, coach, and athletic administrator laid a sturdy foundation for new, innovative platforms in positive youth development. To say he’s built upon this foundation would be an understatement.
A pioneer of character-based culture in youth sports at all levels, Brown has spent his post-coaching life developing and teaching effective team-building strategies. His organization, Proactive Coaching LLC, reaches coaches across the country, providing frameworks for inspiring confidence and developing leadership skills in young athletes.
A renowned clinician in the sporting world, many of Brown’s speeches have taken place at the WIAA Coaches School. A native of Richland, Washington, and graduate of Washington State University, Brown never fails to pay tribute to the student-athletes of the Pacific Northwest. He flashed that famous “Bruce Brown smile” behind the podium at the first 18 editions of WIAA Coaches School, preaching Proactive Coaching tenets to coaches and athletic directors from all corners of the state. His contributions to the annual event eventually earned him the title “The Voice” of Coaches School.
Without exception, Brown has represented his home state with honor, enlightening national audiences on countless occasions, including his Champions of Character Program presentation at the NAIA. His innovations in coaching have earned him a collection of awards, starting with the NAIA National Athletic Director of the Year award in 2002. By the end of the 2000s, Brown’s banner had been hung alongside a variety of coaching legends — first in 2004 as a Mike Krzyzewski Leadership Award winner and again in 2008 as a member of the John Wooden Wall of Honor.
Highly respected leaders in Washington state athletics recognize Brown as one of the premier influences in their experiences with youth sports. Some refer to him as “THE coach’s coach.” Others recall his encapsulating effect as a speaker, commanding a room full of peers no matter the size or scale of the audience. More than anything, those who’ve known Brown — as a speaker, peer, or coach — understand his unwavering commitment to trust and love for young athletes.
