Cascade (Leavenworth) HS Volleyball, Basketball, Track & Field

An elite multi-sport athlete at Cascade (Leavenworth) High School, Megan Franza was not only a 4.0 student, valedictorian, and Homecoming Queen, but also one of the most decorated athletes in Washington state history.

In track and field, she earned 16 top-eight finishes at the State Championships (1994–97) and captured 12 individual State titles. She still holds the 1A Girls State Meet record in the 300m hurdles (43.72, 1995) and is a four-time State Champion in the heptathlon, setting a state record with 5,090 points in 1996—the highest ever scored by a high school athlete in Washington. That same year, she earned Track and Field News All-American honors, qualified for the Olympic Trials in Atlanta, and posted a high jump of 6’½”, the third-best mark in state history. By the end of her career, she had scored 145 points at the State Meet, the second-most by any individual in WIAA history.

Franza’s basketball career was equally remarkable. A four-time league MVP and team captain, she was named the Gatorade Washington State Girls Basketball Player of the Year (1997) and AP State Player of the Year (1997). She set 1A State Tournament records in scoring and three-pointers, earned MVP honors in 1996, and finished her high school career with 2,344 points. Across volleyball, basketball, and track, she earned all-league honors all four years and graduated holding 24 school records.

Her success continued at the University of Washington, where she was a four-year starter (1997–2001), three-time All-Pac-10 selection, and two-year team captain. She led the Huskies to an Elite Eight finish in 2001, graduated as the sixth all-time leading scorer in program history, and was recognized as UW Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Nationally, she earned Second Team Verizon Academic All-American honors and an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in 2001.

Following graduation with a 3.9 GPA, Franza was drafted 61st overall by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2001 WNBA Draft. She has been honored as the North Central Washington Athlete of the Decade (1990–2000), cementing her place among the state’s all-time greats.
